Innovation in Motion: Reimagining Clinical Education, Health, & Global Learning
Monday, October 6 - Tuesday, October 7
See agenda for session locations.
Join us at UVA for a hands-on workshop exploring the Virtual Clinical Experience (VCE) platform from the Global Health Education Group (GHEG). Using immersive smart glasses, participants will experience how VCE can prepare nursing and medical students for clinical practice without in-person attendance. Together, we’ll explore not only how VCE can address urgent challenges in clinical education but also how the technology could be applied across other fields of education and professional training.
Engage with live demonstrations, international case studies, and interactive discussions addressing challenges like preceptor shortages, limited clinical placements, and interprofessional learning gaps. Collaborate in an interdisciplinary design thinking session, explore global perspectives through Virtual Exchange and COIL, and help co-create innovative pilot projects for UVA.
This workshop is open to faculty, staff, students, and administrators. Join for a single session, a half-day, or the full two days. Hands-on experiences, snacks, and refreshments included.

Agenda
Day 1: Clinical Applications
Nursing Applications & Simulation | 9-11 AM | SON Simulation Lab, McLeod 2010Start your day with breakfast and innovation. Step into the Simulation Lab with UVA School of Nursing faculty for an interactive demo of the Virtual Clinical Experiences (VCE) platform. You’ll explore VCE from both the faculty and student perspectives, work through scenarios that mirror real clinical challenges, and see firsthand how this tool can help overcome persistent barriers in clinical education. Along the way, you’ll hear national and international examples of impact, and join in a discussion about how VCE could reimagine clinical training at UVA and beyond.Medical Applications & Simulation | 1-3 PM | SON Simulation Lab, McLeod 2010Refuel with snacks and beverages while you step into the Simulation Lab with UVA School of Medicine faculty for an interactive demo of the Virtual Clinical Experiences (VCE) platform. You’ll explore VCE from both the faculty and student perspectives, work through scenarios that mirror real clinical challenges, and see firsthand how this tool can help overcome persistent barriers in clinical education. Along the way, you’ll hear national and international examples of impact, and join in a discussion about how VCE could reimagine clinical training at UVA and beyond.Day 2: Global Perspectives & Creative Thinking
Global Connected Workforce | 9-10 AM | Virtual (Zoom)Access the Zoom here.Featuring Dr. Tom O'Callaghan (CEO of Medical Education Founders Investment Fund, Dublin, Ireland), Dr. Pavlo Kolesnyk (Uzhhorod National University, Uzhhorod, Ukraine) and Prof. Piruthivi Sukumar (Professor of Global Engagement and Education, University of Leeds, UK)Go global, stay local, explore new pathways for international collaboration and reach learners in rural areas. This hour will focus on potential use cases for this technology both inside and outside of clinical education.Design Thinking Workshop | 12-2 PM | McLeod Hall 2010Bring your curiosity (and your appetite) to this interactive design thinking session—lunch is on us! Working with an interdisciplinary group of peers, you’ll brainstorm bold and practical use cases for the Virtual Clinical Experiences (VCE) platform. Together, we’ll explore not only how VCE can address urgent challenges in clinical education but also how the technology could be applied across other fields of education and professional training.Hands-on Experimentation | 2-3 PM | SON Simulation Lab and McLeod Hall 2010Curious about how the Virtual Clinical Experiences (VCE) platform really works? This session is your chance to roll up your sleeves. Explore the SIM Lab, experiment with the technology and software yourself, and experience VCE from both a faculty and learner perspective.
Whether you want to dive deep into the features or just get a feel for how it looks and operates, this is an open, hands-on space designed for exploration and discovery. No lectures, just time to try it out for yourself.
